I-jusi magazine

I-jusi, translated as 'juice' in Zulu, is a South African design magazine that was founded by Garth Walker in 1995. It serves as an experimental platform where designers can express their own views. Published twice a year, each issue is themed and topics have ranged from religion and identity to sex and death. The magazine is now into its 24th issue.

I've been a contributor since issue number 8 and find it an invaluable opportunity to use writing, design and photography in exploring subject matter that I wouldn’t do in a commercial environment. In turn, it has informed my commercial work. Here's a selection of some of my contributions.

I-jusi #27: The music issue

Contributors were asked to design an album cover for they favourite or fictional band. I decided to do cover art for the fictional band 'ijusi' as featured in the book 'Zoo City' by Lauren Beukes.

I was invited along with Brandt Botes by our friend Garth Walker to contribute work for
the Saint-Etienne Biennale. We were given a brief to envisage the city in the year 2036 AD.
Here’s my contribution of 4 posters and a rationale. Roll over images for English explanation.
